| Lu O'Kerin is the pen name of Dee Kearns. I began my lifelong relationship with pen and paper at the age of 8, when I was the 'reporter' for my 4-H group, publishing our minutes in the local paper. I continued that duty for the next 8 years for the same club. In my Junior year I took a journalism class and was hooked even more firmly by the written word. In my Senior year, I wrote several human interest stories for the local paper and started a school newspaper. It was really more like a newsletter, but it was a huge accomplishment. Alas, it did not survive the school year. After graduation I enlisted in the US Air Force and spent 2 years in service. During that time, I began to dabble with songwriting with my then-ex fiancé. Songwriting didn't draw me as strongly as poetry, so I started putting my energy there. In the years that followed my discharge from the service, I wrote short stories that were stored in my desk drawer, poetry that made it into two 'vanity press' publications, and more free lance writing for a local variety paper. In 1993, I wrote a non-fiction book about the authentic Biblical arguments against homosexuality; properly translating the popular bible verses to make their meanings clear. This book is presently being edited with the intent of seeking publication. In 1997, I started Envoy Publishing; a desktop publishing platform for Envoy, a newsletter for the gay community in the Sioux City area. Envoy survived for four years and at its peak had a circulation of just under 400 and sufficient advertising to pay for printing costs. In 2000, I wrote and presented a workshop on alternative uses of Herbs. Since 2005, I have been working on four manuscripts. I finished the first draft of one in May and will begin editing it next month. I like to read; spirituality and atheism, politics, philosophy, lesbian fiction, horror, thrillers and classics. I love to research; whether for my own curiosity or for a book.  I'm glad to be a member of Kindred Ink because it is an opportunity to get in on the ground floor in a community of writers.
